ASTM Methodology

Without standardization of finished products, it would be nearly impossible for the petroleum industry to exist. Standardization of fuels are extremely important for engine developers who use those standards and specifications to create fuel efficient/high performance engines. The same can be said for all other petroleum products and petroleum ran devices, when looking at the role standards play.

Standards are enforced in most jurisdictions by regulations governing fair representation of the sale of goods. Almost no standard setting agencies test petroleum before it is sold to consumers. Instead, consumers are expected to test themselves or rely on someone to test for them. Testing is very important, especially in situations where fuels not meeting specifications, such as specs for jet fuel, can have catastrophic results.

ASTM International sets the most commonly used standards and test methods for petroleum fuels globally.
